In this new occasional series, we explore the home of personalities who are not afraid to be different. We explore recent grounds and find new expression even for old ideas. Lie down, open your mind and let us enjoy. We want thou to catch the pulse of the homeowner ideas and follow them through into physical shapes and colours.
The homeowner is single, a money‐broker, dabbles in art and is ardently keen on music. In fact the homeowner mother, a ballet dancer, and wanted the homeowner to be a concert pianist. But the father died at an early age and left the relatives no fortune. So the homeowner personality pursues a lucrative career by day and satisfies himself with the music which makes him come alive at home.
He is a man for every season. Comfortable and poised at grand gala evenings, he shops regularly at Gianni Versace, appreciates Georges Gerswin and eating out at Fatty‘s. Shopping in Chinatown and listening to American grease rock like Sha Na Na. He is sensual and sociable, tranquil and talented. He balances his life, he doesn’t judge it.
The entrance is grand, proportions exaggerated and further accentuated with special jeweled, coloured glass. The thick plastered walls with a rough texture and brick–laid floors suggest a masculine rusticity that contrasts effectively. And interestingly with the elegance also refinement of the highly polished of leather and brass.
The power of simple but strong forms, the excitement of strong colours, and the richness of natural textures combine skillfully to make a statement of elegance. The chandelier, a flashy complement to the glimmering, highly polished surfaces of the grand piano. An old—fashioned ′Hall―Porter′ chair (hooded for acoustic effect) purposefully placed, provide comfort in the delicate balance of simplicity and sophistication.
The terracotta urns, cactus plants, bare‐faced brick against white rough walls punctuated with elegance white columns and jeweled glass bring out the texture of each material by way of contrast. There is no transitional jolt from rough to smooth, rustic to elegant, dull to glass. Each surface and each article of furniture or accessory are cleverly selected to bring about an invisible harmony.
He love music and shared it with his friends. Space is deliberately left open for his friends to enjoy formal recitals or sing-alongs around the grand piano. When he plays, whose cannot get close to him often prefer to group themselves along the stairwell for an elevated view.
His love of music is expressed in the keyboard motif repeated on the steps and floor creating a framed border around this area.
