A modern sofa is a main investment ― choose carefully. Since there‘s no way to see how a contemporary sofa is constructed other than tearing open the upholstery, you’re always safest buying from a reputable dealer or reputable living room sofas online. Although you may find excellent‐quality sofas at thrift shops, prepare yourself for either a big job or a major expense if the piece needs reupholstering or slipcover. Whatever you buy, don′t be timid about examining the stuff carefully. Is the fabric sewn all together properly? Is the pattern fitted at the seams? Test for comfort by sitting on it for a while.
The most pricey also softest cushion filling is down. But down cannot be washed to remove dripped in spills and its luxurious sink‐in feeling also means the pillow must be plumped up after each use. Solid foam, which is flatter and boxy–looking, arrives in many densities ― the denser, the more expensive. Less—dense foam contains a lot of air, so it‵s easy to flatten and won‘t wear so well. Shredded foam wrapped in a casing of poly‐dac is usually a good compromise. It gives the look of down (what the pros refer to as a "high crown") but doesn't need constant plumping. It’s washable also long–wearing.
Generally, natural fibers as well as heavy–duty cotton, wools, and linens will last longer than man—made fabrics like polyester, acetate, and rayon, but fabric seals like Scotchguard make maintenance of synthetics easier. (However, such coatings are only temporary and should usually be reapplied each six months.) Natural fibers must breathe and as a rule, cannot be treated ― treating them only clogs their pores and attracts dirt instead of repelling it.
Watch out for fading if your upholstery would be in the sun. Indirect sunlight black will finally turn bluish. Blue color may become purple. Direct sunlight could also destroy fragile fabrics as though silk. Sun plus too‐little humidity could dry out leather also vinyl; they will finally start to crack or peel. Good designing requires a way to protect your carefully planned room from the sun ― blinds, shades or curtains that can be closed during the day.
