Rattan or 'rotan' furniture has never had it so nice. Over the past couple of decades, this once little‐appreciated furniture material has become so popular that everyone is looking at rattan products in a new light. The acceptance of cane is now universal, giving it new status and an enormously sophisticated image. Its new role as ‘fashion furniture‘ has resulted in more individual flair in design and finish.
Let’s delve a little into the history of rattan. Of the 600 types of rattan in the world, 104 are found in Malaysia, growing in hilly forest areas. In its natural state, the propagation of rattan, a climbing plant, is by pollination. Rattan palms have strong, tough but flexible stems of uniform diameter. When harvested, the bark and the thorns are removed, leaving a hard and shiny surface of silicon, which is then treated.
There are a lot of advantages of utilizing cane furniture in the home. Firstly, it is highly durable and can last leastwise as long as a conventional upholstered sofa set. (Cane also requires minimal care and is thus more suited to the tropics.) Secondly, it`s cheaper and more economical if you´re on a budget. Thirdly, there’s more scope for inexpensive individual designs. (Unusual shapes, particularly in easy chairs and table bases, are a cinch with a cane. Bucket seats are woven with half‐inch diameter cane or barrel–shaped low tables also present no problems).
Cane is so versatile that skilled craftsmen can create handwoven pieces without glue, nails or bindings. It can also be woven, bent, curved and looped as the craftsman desires. It was because of the practicality and affordability of cane that young entrepreneurs Gary and Foo Nam decided to go into the cane business. Prior to opening their shop EXCEL CANEWARE in Lorong Mambong, Holland Village, both were involved in the import and export of cane furniture.
Excel Caneware has been in operation for several years now and because the furniture is made in their own factory in West Malaysia, the range available is extremely wide. From flower pot holders, small cane chairs and magazine racks to furniture for the bedroom, bathroom, living and dining room, hallway and patio⁄balcony. Individual custom–made items, carry out a project basis and pieces for export, (regardless of the size of the order), are also catered for.
Design in natural cane or pre—catalyzed lacquer, which offers a wide range of colors like black, cherry or rosewood, can sometimes look stunning, given the right setting. The staff at Excel Caneware can assist you with expert advice on color schemes and space planning. Just give them a call and they‘ll make an appointment to visit your home and help you take stock of your dimensions, assess your needs and plan your designs if need be. You’re also invited to visit their premises, reside in the heart of Holland Village, a self‐contained shopping village.
After–sales service is an important feature in Excel Caneware′s sales philosophy. Should your furniture need ‵touching up‵ before an important function or perhaps some minor repairs, the people at Excel Caneware will attend to it promptly. Natural beauty, strength, and flexibility ― three good reasons why cane is very popular in vogue!
