SBC's TV Newscaster Myrna Thomas is a self‐confessed garage–sale fanatic. “I love scrounging around in backyards for anything old, particularly Asian in origin.“
Some years ago, after visiting the homes of several ex—pats, Myrna realized that they were the ones collecting Asian artifacts, and not so much the locals themselves. That revelation stirred her interest and she started her own collection of antiques, oriental collectibles, Chinese porcelain teacups, Chinese antique hardware, tribal artifacts and ikats from Indonesia.
As we browsed through her home‘s different rooms, she pointed out the many interesting things brought back from her recent trips to Fiji, Indonesia, and America. ”When I travel, I tend to look out for things that a tourist wouldn’t dream of buying. Some of the things I bring home are in a deplorable state so I usually have them refurbished or polished,” she added. ″Putting things together in a home takes time‐one can′t furnish a home overnight.″
Myrna has probably learned this from the time she herself has taken to do up this HUDC maisonette apartment in Pine Grove. She saw a lot of potential in the four different levels, Which separate each living area. On accessing the front door, one descends four steps to get to the living room. The dining area is on the ‵ground‵ level while the first flight of steps leads to the upper hall landing, made into a favorite TV area, and the master bedroom. The two other rooms are on the topmost level. One is utilized as a guest bedroom and the other is a study room.
Feeling strong as she does about cultural preservation, her decor projects mainly Asian elements though her personality is no typical of the Asian women. Two pampered cats named bubbles and tippy share her quiet domain and she is very attached to them. “After putting in a hard day, and particularly in my case, night, at the television station, the senses need–to–be fed and stimulated. I find pleasure in living amongst antiques and old piece,“ volunteered the attractive woman you so often see on the 9 pm News.
